Question: Solo Travel to Zanzibar?

Answer #1:

I have traveled solo in East Africa, including Tanzania but never to Zanzibar solo. However. on another trip i did spend a week in Zanzibar.

I stayed with a local friend for most of the time, in his house, but also stayed one night in a bungalow in Nungwi in Northern Zanzibar.

There is a lot to do is Stone Town. You could easily spend two days just walking around town and the markets, seeing old forts and slave quarters. There are lots of nice little restaurants, including Mercury's, named after the late Freddy Mercury of Queen, who was born on Zanzibar. You can book a half day spice tour and head into the interior to try exotic fruits and see how they grow different spices.

In the north, like Nungwi, the tide goes out (i mean several hundred yards!) in the morning for several hours and all the locals go to scavenge for shellfish, crabs and octopus. You can also go out (but have some type of durable footwear) and walk around seeing small tropical fish and finding sea shells.
There is also a natural cove in nungwi where they raise sea turtles for release. you can go in and visit and hold, feed and touch sea turtles

There is deep sea fishing available and of course scuba diving but they will be expensive. You can look into www.zanzibarwatersports.com for prices and more info.

two videos i posted on the internet from my time in Zanzibar.

Make sure you go to Prison Island. Its a day trip BUT TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!
go to the spice plantations, the museum, Farodhani in the evening and stone town during the day.

Ask around in Zanzibar, they will have day trip to different locations. For example the spice plantations visit is a day tour. Have fun...

I have family there.. so i do not know about hotels.
go to www.virtualtourist.com
